True Crime Lantern Tour at First State Heritage Park

The Dover Green has been the heart of the community since its founding over 300 years ago: a peaceful oasis in the city, surrounded by fine homes and shady trees. You might never guess from its appearance that this historic half-acre has seen more than its fair share of intrigue and murder, hidden stories that this walking tour will dredge up from the darkness of the past and bring into the light. Secrets never stay secret in a small town. Tickets for this tour are $15 per person. Guests are encouraged to wear proper clothing for the weather and good walking shoes. Irreconcilable Differences: The Story of Prisoner Exchange During the Civil War at Fort Delaware

Early in the Civil War, the belligerents had a process with which to exchange prisoners of war. Unfortunately, this process broke down well before the war ended, which had huge ramifications for prisons like Fort Delaware. The differences between the two sides were significant, irreconcilable, and get to the heart of what the Civil War was all about. This program will explain those differences and problems. Auburn Heights Mansion Tour at Auburn Valley

Come explore one of the best examples of a Queen Anne style Victorian mansion that Delaware has to offer with a one-hour tour, at 3 p.m. every Thursday and Friday. The mansion is the former home of the Marshall family whose history and legacy of industry and innovation filled the home with the antiques and furnishings you will see there today. You will get to explore two floors of Auburn Heights with a small group (maximum 10 people). $8 per adult $4 per child. Battery Hike at Fort DuPont

Fort DuPont began its life as an artillery post, defending the river passage to Philadelphia from enemy ships. How was it prepared for this role? In this hike, we will discuss all of the various weapons systems at Fort DuPont, and how they worked. We will also see the remaining concrete emplacements from the early 1900s. Wear sturdy, waterproof walking shoes that you don't mind getting dirty for this one-hour tour. First State Heritage Park is proud to be among many institutions in the First State's capital to support the annual Dover Pride Festival! Stop by the John Bell House Interpretive Center any time between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to learn about some of Delaware history's most significant LGBTQ+ figures. You can also make a pride cockade, inspired by the early American practice of adorning one's clothes with a symbol demonstrating their support for a cause or movement about which they felt passionate. World Oceans Day at Brandywine Zoo

Swim on over to the zoo for a celebration of our blue planet on World Ocean's Day! This event aims to increase awareness of the pivotal role the ocean plays and encourages individuals to take action to protect it, beginning right in our local communities. Archaeological Investigations at the Chapel Branch West site, Choptank River Watershed, Denton, Maryland at Killens Pond

Investigations at the Chapel Branch West (18CA270) site suggest this portion of the upper Choptank River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore was an important nexus of activity throughout the Woodland period (1200 BC – AD 1650). The co-occurrence of a variety of local and non-local ceramic ware types during the Middle and Late Woodland periods situates Chapel Branch West at the boundary of different exchange, or perhaps cultural, zones, facilitating the movement of objects, ideas, and/or people downriver from the north and east as well as upriver from the south and west. The Chapel Branch West site provides intriguing opportunities for expanding our understandings of population migration or replacement, the development of persistent places, and participation in or rejection of larger trade and exchange networks during the Woodland period.

Stories of the Green Walking Tour at First State Heritage Park

The Dover Green has been the heart of this capital since its 18th-century founding. Led by a historic interpreter, experience the stories of the sites and people that have defined the First State experience. There's always something new to discover each time you visit First State Heritage Park! Walking tours are offered twice daily (Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., departing from the John Bell House Interpretive Center (43 The Green).Legislative Hall, Delaware's Capitol, offers guided tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays when the site is open. It is closed on Saturdays except for the first Saturday of each month. We encourage guests to wear comfortable shoes and bring water for all walking tours. Opera in the Park at Auburn Valley

Auburn Valley State Park welcomes Opera Delaware for a free outdoor music experience on the mansion grounds. The one-hour performance includes period pieces from the time of Auburn Heights' construction and more! Bring your own chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy live music as the air cools. In the spirit of the Marshall family's support of the arts, local theatre troupes and arts venues will be tabling at the event to highlight upcoming programs and events. The estate will open at 5 p.m., and the first floor of the mansion will be open 30 minutes before the performance. A food truck will be on site, so swing by early to grab your picnic dinner. Fort DuPont Battery Hike at Fort DuPont

Fort DuPont was built to defend the river passage to Wilmington and Philadelphia from enemy ships that might want to cause harm to those areas. The weapons used in this process were amazing (as were the men who worked them). Come hear stories of Fort DuPont's early days, and take a look at the gun batteries that are still on site. Led by a historic interpreter, experience the stories of the sites and people that have defined the First State experience. There's always something new to discover each time you visit First State Heritage Park! Walking tours are offered twice daily (Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., departing from the John Bell House Interpretive Center (43 The Green).Legislative Hall, Delaware's Capitol, offers guided tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays when the site is open. Fort DuPont Battery Hike at Fort DuPont

Fort DuPont was built to defend the river passage to Wilmington and Philadelphia from enemy ships that might want to cause harm to those areas. The weapons used in this process were amazing (as were the men who worked them). Come hear stories of Fort DuPont's early days, and take a look at the gun batteries that are still on site. Be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes that you don't mind getting a little dirty for this one hour adventure. Stories of the Green Walking Tour at First State Heritage Park

The Dover Green has been the heart of this capital since its 18th-century founding. Led by a historic interpreter, experience the stories of the sites and people that have defined the First State experience. There's always something new to discover each time you visit First State Heritage Park! Walking tours are offered twice daily (Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat) at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., departing from the John Bell House Interpretive Center (43 The Green).Legislative Hall, Delaware's Capitol, offers guided tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays when the site is open. It is closed on Saturdays except for the first Saturday of each month. We encourage guests to wear comfortable shoes and bring water for all walking tours. Be advised that they frequently cover uneven ground and historic cobblestones. These programs are FREE to the public

Cool Off in the Creek at Auburn Valley

Join park interpreters in this outdoor experience for families. Visitors will get their toes wet as they wade into the Red Clay Creek using dip nets and buckets to find and identify wildlife. Expect to get wet; wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked in and pack a fresh pair of dry socks and shoes for after the wading portion. Please bring water shoes or an old pair of sneakers for wading in the creek (fishing hooks and other items may be in the water). Space is limited, and pre-registration is required. Introduction to Rock Climbing at Alapocas Run

Discover the basics of outdoor top rope climbing. Get harnessed up and climb on our natural rock wall, after a brief introduction of equipment, climbing and safety.
