First State, First Day, First Hike


Join Delaware State Parks in celebrating the first day of the New Year with a refreshing hike in the park. Parks statewide will host a First State, First Day, First Hike program to celebrate the national movement sponsored by America’s State Parks to have all 50 states offer First Day Hikes. ALAPOCAS RUN/WILMINGTON STATE PARKS

 

Hike the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, plus Alapocas Run trails

  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Meeting Location: Blue Ball Barn at Alapocas Run State Park
  • Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
  • Minimum Age for Children: any age
  • Restrictions: Combination of paved and unpaved trails
  • Length of Hike: 3.5 miles
  • Things to Bring: Dress for the weather (layers of clothing, winter shoes, hats and gloves) and bring drinking water and snacks

Start the New Year outside! Join park naturalists for a two hour recreational hike along the Northern Delaware Greenway trail as well as the unpaved trails in Alapocas Run State Park. Please dress for the weather (layers of clothing, winter shoes, hats and gloves) and bring drinking water.

AUBURN HEIGHTS PRESERVE

 

Hike the Auburn Valley Trail

Start off the New Year right with a refreshing hike on one of the trails at Auburn Heights Preserve. We will either hike the Trolley Trail or the Auburn Valley Trail loop depending on weather conditions and the preference of the participants. BELLEVUE STATE PARK

 

Hike the Delaware Greenway Trail at 1 p.m.

Kick off the year at the park and have some fun while also getting exercise in nature.  We’ll pick a trail based on the group and walk for about an hour and visit many special places throughout the park.  This hike is for all ages and is stroller friendly.  There is no cost or pre-registration necessary.  Meet at the Arts Center. 

BRANDYWINE CREEK STATE PARK

Hike the Hidden Pond/Indian Springs Trails on January 1 at 1 p.m.

  • Minimum Age for Children: N/A; Must be accompanied by an adult

BRANDYWINE ZOO

 

First Day Hike at the Brandywine Zoo at 10 a.m.

Join us for a stroll through the zoo to learn about how we care for our resident animals during the winter. Program meets at the front gates. May be cancelled due to inclement weather or icy conditions.

CAPE HENLOPEN STATE PARK

 

Hike the Fort Miles Pinelands Trail at 10 a.m.

Hike the Pinelands area below Fort Miles and uncover some of Cape Henlopen’s history. Be prepared for walking in loose sand.

Hike The Point at 11 a.m.

  • Meeting Location: The Point parking lot—extra parking at the Point Comfort Station parking lot
  • Degree of Difficulty: Moderate
  • Minimum Age for Children: 7 years old with an adult
  • Restrictions: No pets permitted

Hike to the  northeastern edge of Delaware, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean.  Experience the “battle” between the sea and land that shape the Point.  We’ll also search for seals and loons out in the water and other mystery items that have washed ashore on the 1.5-hour hike. 

HOLTS LANDING STATE PARK

 

Hike the Seahawk Trail at Holts Landing State Park at 1 p.m.

  • Minimum Age for Children: Recommended minimum age is 6, but open to all ages

It’s a great trail that passes through several different habitats: intertidal zone, marsh, meadow, upland forest. 

FIRST STATE HERITAGE PARK

Join us for a walking tour of the historic Green in downtown Dover. For 300 years, The Green has been the center of commerce, politics, and social life in Dover. Led by guides in 18th century dress, listen to true tales of tragedy and infamy revealing the people and events that left their mark on Dover’s history.

FORT DUPONT STATE PARK

 

Hike the Fort DuPont Walking Trail at 2 p.m.

The hike follows a trail on an old military base.  Visitors will see the old artillery emplacements, and may see some interesting birds and other wildlife as well! 

KILLENS POND STATE PARK

 

Hike the Pondside Nature Trail at 1 p.m.

This hike will travel the entire Pondside Nature Trail with scenic overlook stops. 

LUMS POND STATE PARK

 

Hike the Jersey Trail/Swamp Forest Trail Loop at 2 p.m.

  • Minimum Age for Children: No age limit but must be able to talk a mile
  • Restrictions: Pets must be on a leash

We will hike along the Jersey Trail through forests and agricultural fields, and then come back around on the Swamp Forest Trail alongside the pond.  We will keep our eyes and ears open for any of our winter animal residents! 

TRAP POND STATE PARK
